Who We Are

Gifts of the world started in 1993 as an earnest desire to help people in developing countries forge a better life. Pastor Pauline Kennel and her daughter, Janice Kennel Ropp opened the shop as a mission of Christ Community Mennonite Church. The Mennonite Church is committed to encouraging Fair Trade (see section below) and a shop selling fair trade merchandise with an all-volunteer staff seemed a great way to do just that. Over that past 25 years, these two women and their staff have donated countless hours of their time to help better the lives of people struggling to have a better life. The revenue from the store has helped families stay fed, children go to school, and people to have hope for the future. Please come in and check out the unique and amazing merchandise we have on offer. You’ll find the perfect gift for that special person in your life (and probably one or two for yourself while you’re at it) and you’ll feel great that you enriched the lives of people working hard all over our world.

Why Buy Here

When you shop at Gifts of the World you not only get great gifts at great prices, you help end the cycle of poverty for hardworking people. Because our staff is made up entirely of volunteers, the profits go directly to the artisans themselves. Because of your purchase, a family can better afford to put food on the table, send their children to school, have a safe warm home, and be healthy. These are things we all want, but to too many people in the world it seems an impossible dream. We want to make that dream come true. All of our artisans are paid a fair price for their work. They have stability knowing that more orders will come, we insist they have safe, healthy working conditions and that no child labor is used. We encourage locally sourced natural, renewable, and recycled materials and sustainable environmental practices. Shopping at Gifts of the World is a fun and easy way to lend a helping hand to a person like you. We always have a great selection. What are you waiting for? Come in and see what we’ve got.

What is Fair Trade?

Fair trade proves that greater justice in world trade is possible. It highlights the need for change in the rules and practice of conventional trade and shows how a successful business can also put people first. It is a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty, climate change and economic crisis.
